Dr. Vanderlyn R. Pine entered funeral service in 1957, graduated from the American Academy of Funeral Service in 1959, and assumed the management of his family’s funeral home. In 1970, Dr. Pine was appointed as the Management Consultant for the National Funeral Directors Association, a position he held until 1985. Also in 1970, he became a college professor with special expertise in Sociological Research Methods, Statistical Analysis, and the Sociology of Death.

Dr. Pine began publishing articles on funeral home evaluation and financial management in the early 1970s in the American Funeral Director and NFDA’s The Director. Over the years he has authored, edited, and contributed to a number of books on funeral service, and has given hundreds of featured speeches, lectures, and seminars on funeral home evaluation, management, pricing, mergers and consolidation, and other related subjects for numerous funeral director associations and groups in the United States and Canada.

John S. “Jay” Rhodes III is a third generation funeral director. His education includes an A.A. degree from St. Petersburg Junior College (SPJC)-Clearwater Campus (Now St. Petersburg College) in 1968, a B.A. from the University of South Florida in 1970, and an A.S. in Mortuary Science from Miami-Dade Community College-North Campus (Now Miami Dade College) in 1973. He established Rhodes Funeral Directors, P.A. in 1976. In 1991 he sold the business and managed it for the Loewen Group until 1995 when he joined The Dodge Company as their representative in West and South Florida. He was the first embalming instructor at SPJC, serving for four years.

Mr. Rhodes is a past president of the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice and past president of the Florida Funeral Directors Association. He has presented programs and seminars for NFDA, FFDA, IFDA, FMA, the Georgia Academy of Graduate Embalmers, and the British Institute of Embalmers, as well as numerous other local funeral director organizations.

James H. Justice was born in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina. He was born to a family of farmers and saw millers.
