In 1982, Doug started a new career after 30 years as a minister. He was one of the early pioneers in the study of grief. His work began when a friend said, after losing her young daughter, “Don’t take my grief away from me”. This became the title of his first book and started him on the road to his second career.
His years of counseling as a pastor had placed him in many situations in which he had to help people in grieving situations. This led Doug to start some of the first bereavement groups and to spend a great deal of time analyzing and understanding what processes must occur for a person to emerge healthy on the other side.
Doug was also a pioneer in the area of caring for families of aging parents. His book, “When Love Gets Tough” was the first book on the market to address this vital and painful issue.
Manning founded In-Sight Books, Inc. publishing company which distributes all of his books, tapes and cassettes. His popularity as an author and a speaker has spread over the last 20 years through his catalog which goes to over 18,000 people around the world, his seminars each year that are sponsored by nursing homes, funeral homes, hospices, national professional conventions and churches, and through word of mouth from people who been helped tremendously by his books and CDs and DVDs.
He has recently begun a new blog under The Care Community where he will visit daily with people on the grief journey.
His training division, The InSight Institute has provided Funeral Celebrant training for over 1200 participants in North America. He has been a key-note speaker for NFDA, CANA, ICCFA, FSAC, The Dodge Sunshine Seminars, and over 40 state funeral director conventions.
